Elephant endotheliotropic herpes viruses (EEHVs) can cause acute hemorrhagic disease in young Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Clinical infections account for the majority of fatalities in calves in captivity, posing the greatest threat for sustaining a viable captive breeding population. To date, more than 80 confirmed cases have been reported in Asian elephants worldwide, with 10 confirmed survivors. EEHV has also been confirmed and suspected in both free-living and captive Asian elephant calf deaths in Cambodia, India, Thailand, Laos, Sumatra and Nepal.

There is still no recognised treatment for the virus and it has yet to be cultured in vitro. With only a small population that can be studied, it is essential to share all knowledge not just of advances in research, but also of each clinically ill elephant calf, the treatment it has had and the outcome, both good and bad. The international elephant caring community (keepers, researchers and veterinarians) congregate once every two years to exchange ideas. The next workshop will be hosted and organised by the Zoological Society of London and the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Lectures will take place at ZSL London Zoo, and the practical aspect of the workshop will be carried out by studying the elephant herd at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

Please register at your earliest convenience, as places are limited. Included in your registration are the Icebreaker on the Monday evening, lectures including coffee and lunch on Tuesday all day and Wednesday morning, and transport between ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo to attend the practical on Wednesday.

Dinner and accommodation are not included. More information here.
