Vice-Treasurer

Kim Gruetzmacher

treasurer@eazwv.org

Kim Gruetzmacher has been an active member of the EAZWV since 2005. She served as student representative on the education committee from 2013-2015 and has held the office of vice treasurer since 2014.

Kim’s passion for wildlife conservation can be traced back to before she obtained her first degree in veterinary medicine from Ludwig-Maximilian-University, Munich in 2009. As science intern she assisted with research investigating the levels of persistent organic pollutants in sperm whales. During her studies she worked in multiple externships in zoos (in Mexico, Australia and Canada), at a wildlife rescue centre in Indonesia and at Kruger National Park, South Africa. After graduating, Kim volunteered at the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity in Cambodia, worked in a small animal vet clinic and, in 2011 at Hanover Zoo. She has recently completed her PhD dissertation exploring anthropogenic respiratory disease in habituated wild great apes. She conducted this PhD research at the Robert Koch Institute (in collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) as well as at a WWF project in the Central African Republic where, as part of her fieldwork, she set up a field laboratory for wildlife health monitoring.

Kim would like to continue serving EAZWV by running again for vice treasurer. She believes in strengthening the “W” in EAZWV and wants to help facilitate a dialogue between zoo and wildlife veterinarians as well as between zoo-based conservation initiatives and field projects. She is also particularly interested in the EAZWV’s focus on welfare, ethics and sustainability efforts.
